Dear Dancers and friends,
We are sure you remember the Cairo! Festival of Budapest, 2009 and 2010. A little reminder about the shows of the previous festivals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taWty38NTqQ, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhbgTWBP6sI
Yes, we will make it again, even bigger :) So be ready again for the loveliest oriental dance festival of the season in Central Europe, with a friendly and authentic atmosphere and lots of fun!
We are really proud to welcome three world famous Egyptian star guests here, in the heart of Europe: one of the biggest young stars of Cairo, CAMELIA, the legendary LUBNA EMAM and the great coreographer OUSAMA EMAM! Three of the most famous and most sought tutors and choreographers of the oriental dance world. Their presence guarantees the professionalism, authenticity and the real Cairo feeling! :) Workshops in several styles and levels, gala, competition, parties and even more for those who are already dancers, fans of the real oriental style and also for those who just started to get friends with it :)
CAMELIA: The most shining young star of Cairo, if you see her dance once, you will never forget it. Her style is absolutely unique, magnetic, mixing the classical elegance with modern technique and spiced with her free movement sensation - this makes her to be the most original star of the contemporary Cairo. A passionate teacher - her classes are true inspirations, that's why we are very proud to have her in Hungary being one of the first European country in her tour schedule.
LUBNA EMAM: Simply legendary! Lubna is one of the most sought-after teachers in the oriental dance World. She started to dance at the Kaomeya Troup Academy in the age of 9 in Cairo, later on she became the soloist of the company. She was travelling around the World with the troup during many years. Returning to Cairo she started to assist and coreograph for the legendary dancer, Nagwa Fouad. In the past few years she was a leading teacher of the Nile Group Festival in Cairo, she travelled around the globe teaching and performing, she has thousands of fans because of her unique, passionate, energetic dance and teaching style.
OUSAMA EMAM: The leading teacher and artistic director of the Egyptian Kaomeya Troup for many years, a multi-faceted coreorgapher and instructor, who is representing Egypt in many countries of the World with his dynamic, colorful and joyful coreographies and his authentic yet fresh style. One of the regular teachers of the Nile Group Festival in Cairo, his classes are full of positive energy, which stays with the students for long time after the class. Dancing his coreographies on the stage are a real delight!
MERCEDES NIETO: internationally acclaimed oriental dancer, teacher and coreographer, the main organizer and founder of the CAIRO! Festivals in Budapest, you can read more about her here

International Competition for professional soloists and for groups
This year we offer the chance to compete among the bests not only for professional soloists but also for GROUPS!
Just as last year, in order to qualify for the semifinals you will have to send us your dance video, thus you can make the best out of yourself and the jury will have plenty of time to evaluate your video, so they will be able to make a thoughtful decision. But for qualifying for the final you will have to go on stage and charm them personally!
The members of the jury: Jubna Emam, Camelia, Ousama Emam, Nieto Mercedes (and some more teachers will join us soon).
In both categories (solo and group) we announce and award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places.
Everybody will get a trophy and a Certificate, plus
- In soloist category the winner’s prize is a one-week FREE PARTICIPATION IN THE NILE GROUP FESTIVAL IN CAIRO (a one-week accommodation with breakfast in the five star hotel of the festival; all the registration fees and tickets; moreover, you can enter one master course every day – altogether 6 master courses – for free).
- In soloist category the second place’s prize is a one-off designed exclusive bellydance costume offered by the SCH Fashion!
- The third price is a full pass to the Egyptian Fever Festival's workshops in Katowice, September 9-11, 2011
- The first winners in group cathergory will win 1 workshop by each member for the festival's workshops on saturday or sunday, plus many gift packages from our sponsours, as well as the other winners of this cathegory.
People's Choice award in soloist and in group cathegory as well! - Prizes are yet a surprise, but we will let you know them soon! :)
Application for the Competition
Everybody over 18 can enter in the competition. All competitors must have professional teaching experience and/or stage routine.
In case of groups there is no age limit.
The group must have minimum 2 members (so duets can also enter) but there is no maximum membership limitation. The level in this category of the competition is also advanced, professional so most of the members of the group – if not all - should have the stage routine of an advanced or a professional dancer.
Teachers are allowed to be members of their groups.
Emphasizing the authenticity of the competition, each and every competitor (either in solo or in group category) must prepare with an Egyptian oriental or a folklore style performance. The performance cannot only consist of fantasy elements, show elements, drum solo, fusion …etc., though all of these can be parts of the whole performance if it remains authentic.
Music: in case your chosen music has any of the above mentioned sections (fantasy, show, drum solo, fusion…etc.), it should not be any longer than 1 minute in your 3-minute-long performance.
All kinds of props are welcomed if they match the requirements of the style of the music and the dance.
The semifinals: The competitors’ performances will be juried on the basis of videos thus helping the participation of the international dancers.
You will have to video-record yourself (or your group) and upload the video to YouTube (www.youtube.com) with the title “Second Cairo Festival Competition” and your or your group’s name.
In case of both the soloist and the group performances the time is limited to a maximum of 3 minutes.
Your dance can be a choreography (of your own or someone else’s) or improvisation. It can be an on-stage or a studio record, anyway, you should wear a proper costume. Naturally, your music can be cut, but not your video-record! The video should not contain close-ups on different body parts but it should be a full-shot. And finally, if the video was not recorded especially for this occasion than it should NOT be older then 6 months.
Your performance should belong to one of these Egyptian style categories: classical oriental (song), traditional (baladi, shaabi), modern (pop, baladi pop, modern shaabi), folklore (free style Egyptian or Arabic folklore).
During the scoring the jury does not give points for the background, the location (studio or stage), the professionalism of the way of recording, even the audience can be present or heard on the record.
What you get scores for is:
- the harmony between the dancer(s) the music and the style;
- technical knowledge;
- the distinguishable parts within the music and how the dancer(s) interpret it;
- creativity;
- using space;
- and communication, interpretation of the music.
Now all these may seem a little bit more severe and demanding than other contemporary competitions but DO NOT FORGET that the jury looks forward to see advanced and professional level performances.
The videos will be evaluated by famous international artists and Hungarian oriental dance teachers as well, and they will build up the final order too.
The Finals
Considering all the above mentioned information, from 5 to 7 soloists (depending on the field) and alike 5 or 7 from the groups will make it to the finals. They will perform their dances on the Friday night Opening Show of the 3rd CAIRO Festival.
Soloists: after the announcement of the semifinals results, we will give you some of the most well-known Egyptian music. You will draw lots for the tracks, this is how we will decide who gets which music. Then you will have approximately one month to work on the music you got.
Groups: for groups it is free to choose any music that meets the previously given requirements (it can even be your application video).
The application for the competition becomes valid only with the uploaded video and the received application fee.
Application fee for soloists: 20 euro
Application fee for groups: 13 euro per member
Application fee for festival participants (after 2 paid workshops per head): soloist: 15 euro ; group members: 8 euro;
The soloists, who do not make it to the finals, get back 4 euros from their application fee which they can use for paying for workshops. (2 euros in case of group members)
The deadline for the applications and for uploading the videos to YouTube is:
24.00, 28 March 2011
The links of these videos will be available here on the homepage.
